Gamma 19: May 2022

The new player is done! Kinda.

This will be a really short blog post since we don't have much to show yet. Hopefully by next month we will actually have a proper junkyard to show off. The reason for this is with how we currently go about making assets and building the game. We normally work in a very linear fashion starting from the start of a chapter to the end. This is all good, but this method can create a bottleneck. Normally when we begin development, I begin to plan and build the systems needed for the game, Urban works on the assets, and Gbone works on the music and sounds. My part usually takes the longest which means I have to catch up with the assets. However, once most of these systems are in place, building the game becomes faster as now we have the tools to do it. Now that we started working on Chapter 1, I have to wait on Urban to finish the assets for the chapter. This is fine as I usually have other things to work on, like the player rework, but due to things out of our control I have caught up and that is both a good and a bad thing. It's good because we are moving quickly with development, and it is bad because now I have to wait on Urban to get the next batch of assets done and if I have don't have nothing else to work on then we are just wasting time. So how do we solve this problem? When we break down a Chapter we have, from easiest to hardest to implement, the level and assets, enemies, cutscenes, and bosses. After Chapter 0 we, for the most part, got the development process down for how we build the game and it probably won't change too much(Hopefully). So rather than working from easiest to the hardest, we will work the other way around. Starting in Chapter 2 we will begin working on the boss first. The boss, unlike every other part of a chapter, requires a lot of coding and will keep me busy while Urban and Gbone work on the rest of the assets. By the time the boss is completed, most if not all of the assets for that chapter should be completed and I would go in and build the rest of the chapter and Urban works on the next chapter's boss. This should optimize our development time and bring us closer to finishing the game.

The End

Final thoughts.

While we are a little upset that we haven't made any major progress with Chapter 1, we know that this is just another bump in the road of game development. If you have any questions, comments, concerns or testimonies let us know in our Discord.
